Set in the centre of the forest, this historic former hunting lodge is surrounded by one of the only surviving ancient woodlands in England. Whether you’re visiting this beautiful location for a weekend break or to explore one of the many walking or cycling routes, The Speech House is a stop you have to make. Why not pop in for our very traditional afternoon tea with fine-bone china in the Orangery, or even stay a night in one of our impressive 7 foot Master Four Poster bed suites, to really get an understanding of the character this wonderful establishment beholds. The hotel in an independent family-run hotel and we look forward to giving you the warm and friendly welcome The Speech House is appreciated for locally. We are happy to show you around and give you an insight into the historic elements of the building, there are many original items still available to view. We have shared some of the highlights to look out for below. We hope you enjoy reading about our hotel’s history and distinct character. Gill, Peter & Naomi The Hands Family The Hands Family & Hotels – How it All Began! Peter and Gill Hands started their business “Tauber Hands Ltd”, shortly after getting married in February 1986. Their first business, The Hyperion House hotel was a small 18 bedroom 2 star hotel in Fairford, Gloucestershire, which they purchased and quickly developed into a very successful 3 star 26 bedroom hotel with a popular restaurant. Naomi, currently Operations Director at the Speech House was born in 1988 in Fairford, and lived there with Peter’s daughter, Amanda. Shortly after having sold the Hyperion House the family moved back to Hereford. Having made this decision to opt for an “easier” way of life they invested the proceeds from the sale of the Hyperion into Breinton Court, a self-catering leisure complex on the banks of the River Wye, just outside Hereford . Katy, their second daughter soon appeared, and Breinton Court also became the family home for the next 31 years. Whilst at Breinton Court, Peter and Gill went on to purchase “The Bell Hotel “opposite Tewkesbury Abbey in 1992 and having sold it in 1995 took a short break until 1997 when they purchased the Heritage Park Hotel in the Rhondda Valley a 44 bedroomed hotel with a health spa and large conference and banqueting facility for 250 guests. They sold the Heritage Park Hotel in 2005, thinking they would take a break for a while but after 5 years of Peter taking over as Chairman of “Visit Hereford” for three and a half years and Gill doing some consultancy work, they couldn’t get rid of the “Hospitality Itch”. In 2010, they decided to have one last hurrah and invested in the wonderful historic Speech House. Ten years later, in 2020, their daughter Naomi, joined the family business. Having grown up in hotels, and then working in London for the past 10 years in marketing, she decided it was time for Mum & Dad to start considering the idea of retirement. Naomi, who has a keen interest in mountain biking and the outdoors was appointed “Operations Director”, and is bringing new ideas to The Speech House. She has a broad knowledge of the industry, and looking to bring new thoughts and ideas in to keep the Speech House as the premier hotel in the heart of The Royal Forest of Dean. The Speech House Hotel truly is a Hands family business, with Katy’s art and paintings all around the building, and Amanda holding her weddding at the hotel in 2021! The other new addition to the Management Team is Luca, Peter and Gill’s adopted Lucas Terrier who can often be seen around the hotel. Luca was made “Director of Dog Friendly Visits” He has been given his own Instagram page and become quite a favourite with the guests, both two and four legged.

As a young NQT eager to get into the classroom, I was so fortunate to land my first teaching role at a re-known South Leicestershire Primary School. My teaching style: Focus on what they 'can do' build self-esteem & resilience & deepen understanding. With this positive approach to children's learning I noticed that before long, their confidence to tackle the tasks they couldn't do grew, often with exceptional results. Although my heart always remained in the classroom, it wasn't long before I started moving into more Senior roles as I was keen to impact on whole school development. Passionate about getting the right learning to children when they are younger, I went on to become Head of Key Stage 1 & Literacy with a special interest in how phonics was taught. When you first qualify to become a teacher, interests you may have had then, often change. Always the creative at heart I often took learning away from the desk & into the hall as children re-enacted key periods in history/literacy texts through dance/drama/music. Not only did we cover the curriculum, but it also gave children who may have struggled in the classroom, the opportunity to shine through the arts. Recognising & nurturing children's talents in this way was so rewarding & boosted their confidence back in the classroom too. I went onto become Advanced skills teacher of performing arts. As well as working with my incredibly talented Deputy Head/Head of Music to develop our reputation in this area, I was also seconded to work in other schools in the county to develop that part of the curriculum for them too. I then diversified & became Head of Behaviour Management & Pupil Well-Being. I attending various seminars run by the incredibly inspirational Dr Bill Rogers (Behaviour Management Specialist who sketched his way through seminars rather than power-points!) His simple yet effective strategies changed the way we managed behaviour back in the classroom. As we know, children mis-behave for a reason. If we can get to the root of it, we can work together to find ways to de-escalate a situation before a child ultimately goes into crisis. Unsurprisingly, I developed an interest & connection with Team Teach, award-winning 'positive handling' training which helps staff support pupils with challenging behaviour.

London

Education and Employers is a UK based charity launched in 2009 which aims to“provide young people with the inspiration, motivation, knowledge, skills and opportunities they need to help them achieve their potential”. The charity believes that every young person in our country, wherever they live, whatever their parents or carers’ circumstances, should have the opportunity to meet a diverse range of volunteers and hear first-hand about jobs and the world of work. To help make this happen the charity works with state schools, employers, the national bodies that represent them and a wide range of other partners including the government and third sector organisations. Its flagship service, Inspiring the Future, uses innovative online match-making technology to connect schools and colleges across the country with tens of thousands of volunteers working in different sectors – for free. These volunteers, from a huge range of jobs – from app designers to zoologists, and at all levels – from apprentices to CEOs, have signed up to share their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm about their jobs with young people. The charity’s research has shown that meeting people from the world of work helps to broaden young people’s horizons, raise their aspirations and increase motivation to learn which leads to improvements in attainment. It also helps tackle the ingrained stereotypical views children often have about the jobs people do based on their gender, ethnicity or socio-economic background. People can volunteer from an hour a year in a local primary (Primary Futures) or secondary school to chat informally, either in person or virtually, about their job and career route, take part in career speed networking sessions, give young people careers insights, mock interviews or feedback on CVs. There is also the opportunity to link up with schools for workplace visits, job shadowing, and mentoring. Tens of thousands of volunteers have enabled over two million interactions between volunteers and young people to date. Inspiring Governance launched in 2016 and is funded by the Department for Education. The free matching service connects highly skilled volunteers who wish to become governors or trustees with state schools across England, helping to increase the diversity of governing boards and raise school standards. Education and Employers also undertakes research into the effectiveness of employer engagement in education. It aims to bring together academics, researchers, policymakers and practitioners from around the world to consider what interventions have most impact.

At times people are sick, upset, lonely, worse for wear or want to talk. We stay with them until they are ready to move or until further help arrives. We call the emergency services if needed. Our purpose is to be a reassuring presence on the streets, helping everybody be safer late at night. FOLLOW-UP HELP We carry information on a range of agencies that provide help of different kinds. Anyone can continue a conversation the next day by contacting the Street Pastor coordinator by phone or email. FOOTBALL PATROLS In 2016 we started occasional football patrols on Saturday afternoons, at the request of the Police, for matches that may be contentious. RESPONSE PASTORS Some of our experienced street pastors have been trained for the role of response pastors – volunteers who provide physical and emotional support in times of crisis.
