The Creative Writing Programme

the creative writing programme

Brighton

The Creative Writing Programme is one of the leading centres for creative writing in the UK. After moving out of the University of Sussex it has established a reputation for excellence in Brighton and the South East. Our approach to teaching creative writing At a time when the cost of higher education has made university study an expensive luxury, our programmes offer a practical course of study, taught at university level, at an affordable price. Our innovative approach to teaching focuses on individual creativity and on teaching writing skills within the context of the creative process. Through a practical course of study designed to teach you how to build and structure narrative, our team of experienced writing tutors will help you develop your creative potential. Blended creative writing courses Work patterns and learning patterns are changing. To accommodate this new reality, as well as our in-person courses we have developed a new blended learning structure for our two-year programme. Our blended courses, aimed at local writers in the South East, are a mix of online and in person teaching, with classes taught from the Phoenix Art Space, or The Kemptown Bookshop in Brighton in early autumn and summer and online during the winter. You’ll spend the first five weeks of the Autumn Term meeting up in person, then switch to online learning as Winter sets in. We’ll stick with online classes until clocks go forward in March, then meet up again in person for the end of the Spring Term and the whole of the Summer Term. This way we make the most of what online learning has to offer, get to know each other, work together as a group, avoid travel over the winter months, stay safe and reduce our carbon footprint. We think that’s a positive.

The school is situated in the historic Cambridgeshire Market Town of St. Neots, located close to the famous University City of Cambridge. They stay with local families in order to experience the English culture first hand and have the opportunity of weekend visits to cities such as London, Cambridge, Oxford and Stratford Upon Avon. Our school is situated in the historic town of St. Neots in Cambridgeshire and overlooks the Market Square on the main High Street. However, if its peace and tranquillity you seek, the town sits right on the banks of the River Great Ouse and its luscious green parks.

Rachel Hearne Jewellery

I am a goldsmith, an artist, a craftsperson, a dreamer and a maker. I take great pride in being part of a long chain of makers who have carried on the tradition of handmade jewellery. The permanence, longevity and portability of jewellery provides a rich history in the story of being human. I am proud that my work is part of so many stories of love, celebration and joy. My work is influenced by the play of line and form found in nature and architecture. I enjoy exploring the drama of mixed materials, textures, and surface treatments in my work. I use these influences to create pieces that are contemporary and will stand the test of time. All of my designs are made in my studio in the UK. I specialise in small batch production runs meaning that my work is never mass-produced and is crafted with my own hands. I also offer bespoke commission pieces for those in search of unique and personal items to commemorate special occasions and life events. See my blog page for more details of bespoke work. ETHICS As a human, a mother and a maker I endeavour to be as environmentally responsible as I can in all my practices. This means using recycled precious metal in all my designs, sourcing precious gems through ethical suppliers and using packaging made of FSC Eco materials. I aim to keep business and workshop waste at an absolute minimum, I recycle everything I can and I use no harsh chemicals in my processes. All that said I am not perfect but I do my very best to be responsible. I keep myself educated and informed about what best options are available to me as a maker and promote those ideas and ethics onto my customers and students.

Things are complex, messy and paradoxical, right now. Challenging and difficult for many in organisations. So as a leader or someone responsible for navigating tough and changing times, it can be helpful to have someone alongside you, to help work with the tricky stuff. And most of it is tricky stuff, let’s be honest. I work as a coach. And I design and run leadership development programmes in addition to my work in the field of Organisation Development. And so: • Would you welcome a coach or ‘critical friend’ to support you as a leader? Maybe with a leadership transition? Or wanting to find new ways of working? Recognise that you need to show up differently? A place where you can be an unedited version of yourself. • Would you like your team to work more effectively together, be better than it currently is? Would you like the whole to be greater than the sum of its parts? For there to be more honest communication, or greater collaboration? • Or maybe you want to shift the culture of your leadership population and develop a particular strength in that group to move the organisation on? Or help people see the bigger picture, help them handle the pressure and complexity they face? Coloured 1 Whether it’s coaching, team or leadership development, I can help you face into what’s going on – within yourself, your team, the wider business and in society – and support you in making change, if that’s needed. My clients are as diverse as EY, Wickes, Jaguar Land Rover, the Civil Service and Diabetes UK. My work has a solid psychological underpinning to address personal change, plus a high-level systems thinking lens to ensure that my clients flourish within the bigger picture of their teams, organisations and wider lives. I also bring a strong focus on behavioural practices to create and embed change.

We are a passionate group of HR specialists that love to deal with people. My name is Paula Ashton and in 2012 I started Ashton People Solutions, a company which provides HR support, advice and consultancy to small to medium sized businesses across the UK. I have worked in HR for over 20 years in corporate organisations such as Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland, Dixons Group and the automotive sector. I developed Ashton People Solutions as a result of friends and family business-owners requesting my help with HR issues. I soon realised that there was demand for ad-hoc HR support for smaller businesses, either on-site or remotely. I have extensive experience of dealing with employment law advice, HR policy advice – including disciplinary and grievance-, maternity and absence management. I have managed large-scale recruitment and selection campaigns and can offer this service along with training and development programmes. I have a Masters in Personnel & Development and a Chartered MCIPD qualified member. In addition to this, I am also a Qualified Trainer, Level A Psychometric Assessor and Level B Personality Profiling Assessor. Claire and Brigid are HR Assistants and joined me in April 2021. Claire holds a Level 5 CIPD HR Management qualification and a 1st class honours degree in Law & Business Management. Heavy Metal Therapy

heavy metal therapy

London

Heavy metal therapy is an online resource and community of people who find metal music helpful for mental well being. It is a place to find and share experiences of how metal has helped us, the meaning we take from songs or lyrics, and play lists that we have found useful. It is for everyone, so we don’t judge each others metal preferences. If you would like to share your own recovery story about how metal has helped you please contact us, we can make stories anonymous if you prefer. We continue to develop a few shared playlists under heavy metal therapy, which can be expanding and changing. We like people to share their own music or art if it comes with a reason/message to do with mental health. We may be a small and select group, but we are open to suggestions of expanding. Hopefully over time this will become led by and shaped by those who use it, so it’s not set in stone, it can grow and change. See this video for a bit more about us. Heavy metal therapy is both a website and on social media, so find us on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram. We are a registered Community Interest Company (more here) Quick disclaimer: we know it’s called heavy metal therapy, but we are not claiming to be a substitute for psychological therapy, we are a self-help and peer support community. If you feel you need support from mental health services please seek it through appropriate channels (in the UK this is usually via your GP). Also, all things metal tend to be quite sweary and have dark themes, so there’s quite a bit of that in the stories and playlists.

YOU HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE! I set up my first business at the age of 17; buying pizzas from a local factory and selling them to hungry students at my college. Not groundbreaking by any means, but it taught me a huge amount about business, and paid for my social life, as well as funding a modest expansion in the form of a chest freezer, delivery bike and eventually a van. More importantly, this little pizza business gave me the knowledge and confidence to develop my next idea. COMPETING WITH FILOFAX At 19, I designed and manufactured a range of products to compete with the global brand ‘Filofax’ (for those who remember them). My first order (from WH-Smith) was manufactured in a rented bedroom in Tring, Hertfordshire, and the business quickly grew big enough to win several innovation and business awards. Within 18 months the range sold through many major UK and European retailers, including Liberty’s and Selfridges, as well as being used as commercial folders and gifts by brands like Mercedes Benz and Shell Oil. GROWING COMPANIES Since selling that brand at 22, I’ve grown several businesses with the majority of the last 25+ years running and owning companies in the branding, design, marketing and business development sector. From turning 2 people working from a bedroom making very little to a 30 headcount agency turning over £2.5m through to a 20 person agency in London to have 400 people in offices all over the world. Always with a focus on growth and working closely with my clients, it is here that I have advised many hundreds of different companies on their positioning, brand, marketing, customer development, growth and efficiency.
