We are a charity that works with young people who are homeless, leaving care, or at risk of homelessness in the South West.1625 Independent People works with young people who are homeless, leaving care or at risk of homelessness in Bristol and the South West. Our services ranges from signposting or advice, to intensive one-to one support, supported housing, group activities and peer support. As well as providing safe, stable accommodation, we provide practical and emotional support to ensure vulnerable young people can build healthy relationships, develop independent living skills and can access jobs and training. We nurture the existing skills, strengths and talent in young people, to show them they can believe in themselves, and that they have the skills to thrive as an independent adult. Our staff are trained to provide emotional support, as young people often have histories that involve trauma and disrupted family life. We know that positive relationships based on trust, mutual respect and dignity is the key tool for change for young people.

Early memories take me back to when I was a student and summers spent teaching English to classes of boisterous teenagers in church-halls. That did not deter me! After graduating from Bristol, I took an English language teaching course in London and, in the mid 80’s, I joined a local part-family owned business that pioneered ‘living and studying’ in teachers’ homes worldwide. In the mid 90’s, I opened a school for adults in south-east England and, following British Council accreditation and membership to English UK, we were invited to become a member of IALC, an award-winning, global network of independent language schools. Started Aspire Dance Studio in 2008 along side studying at Dance Academy South West in Bristol. Fully qualified to teach up to major level in ISTD Tap, Modern and Jazz. Alex has many years’ experience in choreographing solos, duets, trios and groups dances for festivals, exams, shows and local events. Alex has also taught Dance GCSE at Weobley High School for the past 8 years, and will be continuing to develop the subject within the school over the next few years. Over the last 5 years Alex has lead Aspire Dance Studio to success at Worcester Festival and Gloucester Festivals where a number of dancers have qualified for championships and won many medals in both senior and junior age ranges. Alex completed her Acrobatic Arts training 2 years ago and is now a qualified Acrobatic Arts Module 2 Teacher with well established Acro classes running on Saturdays. billionphotos-1001069 Miss Penny Hemms Penny cropped Penny began her dance training at the age of four in Charlton Kings. Her family relocated to Gloucester in 1986 and she enrolled at Gloucester Dance Studio where she continued her training in B.B.O Ballet, Modern and Tap until she was sixteen. She then attended Performers College in Essex and completed a three year full-time course in Professional Dance and Musical Theatre, gaining her Associate teaching certificates in I.S.T.D. Modern, Tap, Jazz and Ballet. Penny also choreographs festival solos and group pieces. Penny has danced professionally in cabaret in London’s West End and performed at various famous locations including Wembley Stadium, the London Palladium and Her Majesty’s Theatre. Penny returned to Gloucester in 2001 and has been dance teaching around the county ever since. She has also continued to attend further teacher training and lectures in order to keep her qualifications up to date. Penny joined the faculty of Aspire Dance Studios in January 2012 and is excited and proud to be part of a young, vibrant and talented school. Re:ACT Performing & Production Arts provides classes and theatre opportunities for young people in Somerset, North Somerset and Bristol. We welcome students (aged 4 - 19) to musical theatre classes, acting classes, dance classes, production arts classes and private singing and instrumental tuition. We do not only create performers, but writers, directors, choreographers and designers. This training is taught by expert, qualified, DBS checked and first aid trained tutors who help to build confidence, increase interpersonal skills and create team players. Control Shift celebrates computational arts that explore the messy spaces in-between humans, nature and machines. We bring people together to re-imagine our relationships with technology through dialogue and arts. We live in a world where machines increasingly collect information about us, reducing our bodies and the things around us to streams of data. In turn the digital realm can feel abstract, and out of our control. The stuff of computers and digital infrastructure is often hidden out of sight and huge power imbalances exist around who is making technology and who benefits from it. Yet the impact of our interactions with machines and technologies are very much rooted in the body, materials, and emotions. Through workshops, discussions, installations and screenings Control Shift brings creative and critical approaches to technology. Control Shift 2020 was curated by Becca Rose, Martha King and Rod Dickinson, and you can visit the archive to find out more about the programme. In 2019 we produced ‘You Make the Rules’ which was part of Processing Community Day (a global celebration of ‘art, code and diversity’ initiated by the Processing Foundation). Control Shift Community The Control Shift network is a collective of digital artists, educators, producers, and technologists from Bristol (UK) and working internationally. I am a freelance designer-maker, applied artist, crafts-woman, whatever you want to call me – I stitch stuff by hand; fabric, metal, porcelain, leather, vitreous enamel.. . My work is various, it depends whether I am working for myself, to commission or collaborating with other artists. But whatever I do is slow to make; detailed hand stitching in any material whether in silk, linen, wool or wire takes time, consequently my work is also slow to evolve. I decided to show on this site what I do, who I am work with, how I work and also how I think. I want to show the work behind HER WORK not just the finished things. The journey from the first idea, searching, researching, drawing, sampling and eventually making the finished piece. You will be able to watch my work progress, or not; maybe by seeing this record people will come to value making that is manufactured by hand, heart and eye. In May 2010 I developed – Heart Space Studios ( from my yoga practice “Put your Hands in your Heart Space”) and for 5 years it was a space in Bristol England for all things textile. The activities at the studios can still be viewed – I closed the studio workshops in 2015 – the classes remain on this site as part of the blog, they contain many of my most popular posts….. Heart Space Studios continues as a group of makers who develop projects primarily for publishing companies. Most notably we work with designer Kaffe Fassett in the production of his patchwork quilt books and other fabrics.

The Key Unlock Potential is a Bristol-based charity founded by volunteers who were recruited by The Restore Trust. The charity was registered in July 2019, registration number 1184633. Our team is made up of board members including representatives from the Restore Trust and HMP Bristol and volunteers. Find out more on our team page → The story so far The charity was registered by Suzanne Thompson of the Restore Trust Bristol in response to a need to reduce reoffending by providing access to work. Prisoners reported that on release from prison, they face huge challenges in obtaining paid employment. The charity name was chosen by a focus group in the prison, and the board continue to value the importance of the voice of those with lived experience. The Key facts Many people with convictions struggle to obtain work. According to gov.uk, just 17% of ex-offenders secure a job within a year of release. A YouGov survey commissioned by the DWP found that 50% of employers would choose not to employ ex-offenders, deeming them unskilled and untrustworthy. This is despite 86% of companies that employ ex-offenders rating them as “good at their job”, and 81% of consumers stating that companies who employ ex-offenders are positively contributing to society. The lack of stability and lack of security due to unemployment creates a cycle of reoffending and makes successful rehabilitation much more challenging. This must change, and as the statistics above illustrate, tackling this problem can be beneficial for all parties involved. Food with conviction Our vision is to create a safe, welcoming café and retail hub on Bristol’s Gloucester Road that will provide a steppingstone for people transitioning into permanent employment, a destination for the local community, and a mechanism for fundraising. The food for the café will be prepared in the prison’s commercial kitchen, by prisoners. The cafe will operate 5 days a week and will be open between 8:30am and 5:30pm serving “food with conviction”. Interspersed within the café area will be art and handmade items for sale. This will include garden furniture made from pallets, including tables and planters as well as products such as keep cups and cotton bags designed and printed in the prison. We will provide paid employment placements for people released on temporary licence (RoTL) or who have recently left prison. This will help address the most pressing issues facing the prison population, by providing access to work experience and employment, training and rehabilitation support; as a result, beneficiaries will develop transferable skills that will enable them to move on to permanents jobs. Our vision is Key We are on a mission to help people rebuild their lives after they leave prison. We want to give people the tools they need to unlock confidence, pride, and positivity. We want to create a safe space for personal growth and practical experience that will enable people to secure future employment, financial stability, and break the cycle of reoffending.
