Steelworking still has a presence in Workington in the shape of the TSP heavy engineering works. The last part of the main steelworks disappeared in 2005 with the closure of the rail mil and long welded rail plant. Rails had been made in Workington and exported over the world for 128 years. Leyland established its national factory in 1971 at nearby Lillyhall. Over a life of less than a quarter of a century the factory despatched thousands of Nationals, Lynxes, Olympians, Titans and rail buses. As well as being bus (and rail) enthusiasts, we want to mark the unique contribution of the town to the country’s economic and cultural development. WTHT (Workington Transport Heritage Trust) Our vehicles include a number of buses, fire engines and other vehicles some of which are used in community events. Volunteers are engaged in restoring, maintaining and operating these historic vehicles. We have an extensive archive of local bus and rail material. This includes posters, signs, publicity materials, books, magazines, drawings, photographs, and petrol pumps. Our shop at Workington railway station sells hot & cold drinks, snacks, souvenirs, WTHT branded items and second hand books. It is by the main waiting room and, in normal times, it is open Mon to Saturday from 9am to 2pm, closed on bank holidays. All hours are subject to volunteer availability. Using our heritage buses, we usually run local free bus services on Boxing Day, plus park and ride services at a number of local shows. Our premises are home to around 16 of our own vehicles plus 11 privately owned guest vehicles. Not all of these are currently fit for the road. We work with groups which include Cumbria Omnibus Group, The 550 Group, Barrow Transport Group, Carlisle Bus Group, and a number of individual owners. We have two sites only one of which has a building – but we are working on curing this fault! We are grateful for the support of our members, and local businesses including Stagecoach North West and Northern Rail. We have volunteering opportunities in all aspects of restoring, maintaining and driving vehicles. Also in buildings and site maintenance, cataloguing & running our archive, producing educational materials, running trips and events, and fundraising.

Makers Quarter was formed in response to a number of issues facing the independent makers of Manchester. High commercial rents, impractical spaces, and isolation are major problems experienced by many. We felt passionately about finding a solution for this and believe that a shared workshop space is the solution. Manchester was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution and sadly over the years industry has been swapped for office space and city center flats. There needs to be a balance to help small independent businesses thrive and we think the Makers Quarter is a great start! Makers quarter will not only be providing space but a creative community and exciting lessons to the public. Having access to a shared workshop, studio spaces and craft tables in the heart of the city will encourage all types of makers to come together. Having tested the water in a small workshop in collaboration with 3space the positive response has encouraged us to open a larger space. We have searched endlessly to find a suitable location for our members and Makers Quarter in now finally a reality! Our 7500sq ft workshop in central Manchester has great transport connections. Cornbrook tram stop is just a 6 minute walk away and a foot/cycle path along the canal cuts through Castlefield locks and takes you straight into town in less than 15 minutes. Makers Quarter is shared between our members and divided up into larger studio spaces, pods, craft tables and a separate wood workshop for all to access. Creating this community allows us to provide a hassle free, creative space at affordable rates. By offering flexible space on both a permanent and pop up basis we aim to support makers of all levels. Anyone can join, whether they are a professional maker, need a workbench for a weekend hobby, or would like to learn new skills. We will be offering classes in all sorts of interesting crafts such as ceramics, woodwork, Upholstery, furniture making, leather work and many more....check on our members page for upcoming classes or to book a slot in the workshop.

As a recruiter with over 20 years of experience in the field of data science and analytics, Roisin McCarthy observed a worrying decline in female candidates applying to roles across every level. The gap in female applicants led her to examine the underlying causes and barriers to women in the data and analytics industries. What she found led her to collaborate with Britain’s foremost analytics expert, Payal Jain and together, Women in Data was formed to confront this startling problem and to agitate for change. Women in Data® aims to bring awareness through media appearances and events; in particular, the landmark annual Women in Data® conference. This began as an understated symposium, attended by 100 people in 2015 and it erupted into the most highly anticipated annual data science event in the UK. At the 2019 conference at the Arora O2 Women in Data welcomed more than 1500 attendees, and in 2020 thousands of data professionals attended a week of online Women in Data events and workshops. The message of diversity and equality is permeating into the data zeitgeist with each Women in Data® event we run. From the classrooms of Milton Keynes to the House of Lords, we have been working tirelessly to raise awareness of the issues and emphasise the value of female participation at every level. We collaborate with our corporate partners to stage regular Women in Data networking events throughout the year, providing opportunities for leaders in the field (mostly women) to share their knowledge and experiences via informative presentations and discussions. We intend to emphasise and celebrate the accomplishments of women because ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’. All Women in Data events are for women at every stage of their careers to connect with one another in a safe and stimulating environment. In 2011, I discovered I had a spiritual gift that enabled me to connect with universal energy. This discovery came to me very quickly and without warning. My spiritual life previous to this had been non-existent. I was not attached to any religion, or had any visions, or felt anything. I was very content with my life. The universe clearly had other ideas for me and sent me a premonition of an accident that would happen to one of my daughters. The vision got to the point that I could clearly see life after the accident, and it was not a pleasant life at all. I made the decision to listen to the vision/warning and change course so the accident wouldn’t happen. This then raised questions for me as to where did that vision come from. Through some wonderful people around me I began my spiritual journey, learning about a whole new universe out there. I found I connected very easily and could tap into this wealth of support and wisdom. Although in many respects beautiful, this new world also opened up huge challenges for me. Family very dear to me challenged what I was experiencing and wanted to stop me practicing. I got very ill at the same time and had to battle every step of the way. I did not stop learning though, and it has been the spirituality, as well as sheer determination, that has healed me and got me to where I am today. I pursued my gift as a spiritual healer; holding circles with friends, becoming reiki attuned, healing with crystals, working with the angelic realms and giving readings. Then I went on a course about home healing through dowsing and Into The Light Property Healing was born. I now use my spiritual connection to alter energy in homes here on earth. It’s fantastic. If I couldn’t do it and get the results I have achieved, I wouldn’t believe it myself. This line of work is now my business and my life. I take my work very seriously, although I understand that many of my clients will never truly understand what I do. That’s ok, because it is the result that matters.
