Most sail-training programs focus on the essential hard skills. After years of experience in the professional maritime industry, we decided to not only cover expedition sailing skills in a Morse Alpha Expedition but also emphasize crisis management, leadership, professionalism, and camaraderie. These are the skills that will keep you and your crew safely working together even in a crisis situation. Our programs cover a broad curriculum of hard skills such as sail theory, weather, technology, voyage planning, first aid at sea, engines, traditional navigation, emergency drills (MOB, drogue, fire, etc), VHF protocol, RADAR, anchoring, and more. But it doesn’t stop there. We also discuss communication and leadership, bridge resource management (BRM), maritime law and conduct, etc. Our philosophy is that even when you aren’t sailing a commercial vessel, you are still bound by the same laws, weather challenges, crew dynamics, and physical forces. Therefore, recreational sailing shouldn’t be taken lightly. But on the flipside – we love to laugh, bake cookies on cold days, dip in the ocean, and have fun. It helps to have the last name "Pure" - it goes with so many nouns - and as a teacher, it made perfect sense to put "learning" after my name. Pure Learning started when my triplet children were four years old. As a reading specialist, who had experience in the classroom and in the private learning center arena, starting a small tutoring business seemed like the logical next step. I could set my own hours, focus on working 1:1 with students who had dyslexia and other learning issues, homeschool my own children, AND I could develop materials along the way - something I always enjoyed doing as a teacher. When I began working as a reading specialist at a Montessori school, I started implementing spelling lessons I had developed. Orton-Gillingham-based lessons with explicit skills instruction involving letters and sounds AND the use of three modalities - visual, auditory, and kinesthetic - were the most effective. Some of my students were strong in one area but weak in another. By presenting all three modalities in a lesson, each student could find their own strength and I could see how my student learned best. The teachers saw the difference the lessons I had created were making in their students' spelling and writing and craved a program that would teach them how to teach spelling AND make sense to the students. From that, Working with Words evolved. Fast forward 20+ years and, today, I can look back and know that this Orton-Gillingham-based, multisensory approach focused on phonics and the six syllable types has been successful with early, struggling, resistant, underconfident, AND strong readers and spellers. When later I travelled as a student, I exchanged recipes with other people and grandmas from Sicily, Puglia and Tuscany. David's story The Fat Fish team has developed over 100 mobile apps in the last ten years, including the Tiny Sports franchise, which has had over four million downloads. How did you get started in the gaming industry? Initially via my degree and coming up with website ideas to try and make money. Just before we graduated in 2004, two classmates and I decided we wanted to set up a software business, Bright AI. We had some ideas for products and reached out to our network to find people that were looking to outsource software development projects. We won our first project a month later. Bright AI started mobile application development in 2005, producing branded football content such as wallpapers, games and animations. We developed and published the smash hit utility app My Secret Folder in 2011, generating over £1million in revenue and reaching the top five paid charts in the UK and US. This allowed us to develop more of our own intellectual property. We set up mobile development studio Fat Fish Digital in 2013, of which I am founder and managing director. What's been the biggest challenge in your career so far and how did you overcome it? There have been two big challenges in my career to date: 1. Picking up the business skills required, such as planning, cash flow and managing staff. The technical skills we picked up on our degree were second to none, but we had to learn everything else from scratch. 2. Moving away from production to management. My experience and passion lay in working on projects, so being able to delegate to others and focus on the business strategy and management was difficult. What's the most surprising thing you've encountered in your industry? Probably the biggest learning curve was learning how to run a business. In the early days of the app store it was very much like the Wild West, with people trying different tactics to get an upper hand. I would say we saw some surprising things there!

Why EY Matters? My love affair with the Early Years sector began back in 2011 when I started working with Laura Henry, and through my work with her I started to connect with other Early Years Professionals. During 2013, I supported Laura with her vision of creating an organisation for the Trainers and Consultants of the sector, by organising the first meetings, the first survey and collating the results. Out of this vision NEyTCO was born. Launched in 2014 at the House of Commons, NEYTCO - National Early Years Trainers and Consultants - brought together experts in the sector to offer mutual support for trainers and consultants and a one-stop-shop for early years settings, local authorities, schools and others. In 2017, at the invitation of the CEO, Catriona Nason, I started working closely with NEyTCO, looking at the member experience, finding ways to improve the membership offering and also promoting the members and the organisation, but sadly in the current climate, NEyTCO was unable to survive and closed in October 2018. After receiving the devastating news that NEyTCO was unable to continue trading, I thought long and hard about what this would mean for the sector and then came up with the idea that the new Twitter Chat (#EYMatters) I had introduced a few weeks earlier in September could perhaps be utilised in some way to support Early Years Professionals to continue connecting, communicating and collaborating. With this in mind, I formed a new company EY Matters Ltd with the sole purpose of providing the platform to support the sense of community that has been building over the past few months between the NEyTCO Members and other individuals, companies and areas within the sector. I should stress, this is a separate venture from my main business, Virtual Support UK Ltd, where I still provide support and administration services to the sector on a Pay-per-Minute basis!
