The Food Partnership was started by local residents in 2003, and our committed team of staff & volunteers deliver a range of food projects which have helped over 15,000 local people learn to cook, grow their own food, eat a healthier diet and waste less. Eating is central to life’s celebrations and memories, and our approach is to use this power of food to bring about change. Much of our work benefits vulnerable adults and people experiencing deprivation, isolation, poor health and other life challenges. Our activities makes lasting changes to habits and behaviours which improve lives. We’re a not-for-profit organisation and we work with a wide range of partners including community organisations, statutory agencies, local businesses and individual residents. Our work has been recognised by independent bodies – most recently awarded ‘Non profit of the year’ 2019 at the Brighton & Hove Business Awards, ‘Team of the Year’ at the Cost Sector Catering Awards 2019 and the ‘Community Benefit Award’ at the 2019 Southeast RICS awards for the build project to create the Community Kitchen. We led Brighton & Hove’s successful submission for ‘Gold Sustainable Food City’ status. We hold the PQASSO Level 2 quality mark, and are proud to be a Living Wage employer. At Braintree we have just completed a whole campus transformation programme, providing outstanding learning environments for all subject areas, including some of the very best facilities in the country for Digital Media and Engineering. Recent developments have included a brand new STEM Innovation Centre at our Braintree campus, extensive new facilities for Creative and Digital Media in Colchester and Braintree and a welcoming library and study zones in Colchester. These developments complement our existing fantastic facilities for Hospitality and Food, Performing Arts and Art and Design and many well equipped classroom spaces. Our degree students, enrolled at University Centre Colchester enjoy their own building and facilities and study on a wide range of degrees and apprenticeships, which are also focused strongly on preparing them for work, or progression at work. University Centre Colchester has an excellent track record for its graduates gaining work or further study on leaving the University Centre.

To put things simply, students want to know more about us before they decide whether to select us as their distance learning provider. And who can blame them! The initial idea of setting up UK Open College was the brainchild of our director Bill Nicholls. After many years of working within an education and in particular the distance learning sector. Bill gained a thorough understanding of exactly what students were looking for when embarking on their home study journey. After years of speaking and dealing directly with distance learning students, it was soon established exactly what it was that students required. I have been a drummer for over 25 years and my professional career saw me touring the U.K. and Europe extensively. I also have a vast experience of sound engineering and promoting as well as recording. Having started with snare drum and percussion at school including playing with the Bristol School's Orchestra I later started playing the drum kit and taking my playing and lessons seriously. After a great deal of experience playing with local bands I met some very talented and experienced musicians with whom I set up a highly successful professional function band. This band toured extensively every year for 10 years both in the U.K. and abroad with their favourites being Holland, Germany and Portugal gaining an excellent reputation and attracting top level management. I mixed this with deps and recordings for a variety of artists covering many different styles. I started teaching drums privately after completing my first teaching qualification (I then quickly become a fully qualified teacher through studying in my free time). After building-up a successful private practice I taught in primary and secondary schools for Bristol City Council, Bath & North East Somerset and Wiltshire County Council. I have also taught in private schools and ran several series of highly popular band workshops in youth clubs in Bristol and Bath. I currently mix teaching drums with playing regularly with a variety of bands and teaching at Bath College.
