The Partnering Initiative (TPI) was founded in 2003, with the passionate belief that only through collaboration among business, government, NGOs and the UN can we achieve the shared vision of a prosperous economy, thriving societies and a healthy environment. With roots going back to 1990, TPI is the world’s longest-established organisation dedicated to multi-stakeholder partnering. It has guided the development of six in-country partnership platforms, resulting in the creation of multiple partnerships around the world. It has supported organisations such as Unicef, World Vision, the World Food Programme, Care International, Ikea Group, to develop their partnering strategies and build their institutional capacity to partner. And it has developed policy pieces that have influenced the United Nations system and international donors in their engagement and support of partnering. We are smaller than your average secondary school and as a result we know our pupils well. Foundation funding will be primarily directed to programs that address issues within our three focused program areas that impact children in these identified vulnerable neighborhoods of greater Long Beach. Long Beach, the 7th largest city in California, is on one hand a city of great resources: culturally rich, boasting beautiful ecological features, and home to esteemed higher educational institutions. On the other hand, it is a city of great needs: facing high levels of poverty and its multiple effects, environmental pollution, and rising housing costs. Over the years, Long Beach has become “a tale of two cities,” where certain neighborhoods are characterized by the benefits and resources of affluence and other neighborhoods are bearing the brunt of low incomes, decreased resources, and the challenges of communities of poverty. *Slides & facts courtesy of the Long Beach Community Action Partnership, LBCAP.org Long Beach’s areas of affluence—concentrated primarily on the east side of Long Beach– are characterized by high annual median family incomes, longer life expectancy, higher employment levels, and overall community safety. Children have access to a vast array of resources that promote their development including high-quality schools and after-school enrichment programs of diverse types, excellent access to health care, and safe spaces to grow up and recreate. Areas of critical need are concentrated primarily within North, West Central, and Southwest Long Beach. These neighborhoods experience high levels of poverty, exposure to environmental pollutants, and low levels of educational attainment. Families and children in these areas face great barriers in accessing health care resources, support in early education and educational attainment, and affordable arts programming. These neighborhoods also contain the largest concentration of children in the city.

It’s about structure, and more specifically about putting information where readers have been trained to see it. However, this is not what most people are taught. Writers are often handed a lot of “rules” that do little or nothing to improve their writing. You probably know them: Avoid passives. Vary your language. Shorten sentences. Paragraphs must have an explicit topic sentence, 3 supporting sentences and a concluding sentence. Jargon sounds academic. Data equals thinking. Write the way you talk. Fix your grammar and you’re fine. Word choice is everything. Sentences should be under 29 words long. Never start a sentence with but, however or because. Never split infinitives. And so on… These are both disempowering and (in the main) untrue, yet many teachers continue to dish them out. This course is different – really different. In the 10-week course, five class sessions are concerned with structures that will help participants produce a first draft. The next five sessions cover, in detail, a dynamic system for altering that first draft, making it understandable to others without following any of the above ‘rules’. The intensive 5-day course begins with a first draft, and consists of morning group sessions based on that draft, followed by afternoons revising (first for structure and content, but in the last three days also for readability). A selection of topics will be omitted from the 5-day course. The course continues with email support as needed until the article is submitted to a refereed journal (and through the entire revision and acceptance process)

Cove Park’s unique programme of residencies, commissions and collaborative projects respond to and support the diversity of contemporary artistic practice in all the art forms. We host national and international artists from all cultures and career stages. We create a supportive and stimulating context in which new work and ideas can be developed, tested and shared. The bespoke and award-winning spaces we provide for residents and visitors to live, meet and work in, are located on an outstanding site overlooking Loch Long and the Firth of Clyde, just one hour from Glasgow, on Scotland’s west coast. Founded in 1999 by Peter and Eileen Jacobs, Cove Park is a charity funded by Creative Scotland, by trusts and foundations and by the generosity of individuals. Since 2000, Cove Park has hosted over 1,500 artists and our former residents include Margaret Atwood, Ann Carson, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Mariana Castillo Deball, Alasdair Gray, Beca Lipscombe, Tom Morris, Ciara Phillips, Elizabeth Price, Charlotte Prodger, Simon Starling, Christos Tsiolkas, Jan Verwoert and Louise Welsh. We develop residency programmes in partnership with leading national and international companies, art schools and organisations, including Varuna – Australia’s National Writers’ House, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Gaelic Books Council, Lolli Editions, Senegal’s RAW Material Company, The Royal Scottish Academy, CCA: Centre for Contemporary Arts, Fluxus Art Projects, The Work Room and more. We host and facilitate residencies devised and led by prominent organisations, such as BBC Scotland, Magnetic North, Cryptic, and Playwrights’ Studio Scotland. We also commission new work and work collaboratively with partners on major national and international projects such as Scotland + Venice 2019 and Creative Carbon Scotland’s Climate Beacons.
