opus - an organisation for promoting understanding of society

It was founded by Sir Charles Goodeve in 1975 with the object of promoting understanding of society and of organisations within society. He believed that, if we were better able to understand the processes operating in industry and society – particularly those causing conflict – then our decisions could become more rational, we would become more effective managers of ourselves and others and we would be able to act with greater authority and responsibility as citizens. In establishing OPUS as a non-political organisation with charitable status, Sir Charles was supported and encouraged by The Tavistock Institute and the Industrial Society. Its study and promotion of a better understanding of society – how it works and how the individual relates to it – was recognised as a distinctive field that was not addressed by other bodies. OPUS aims to develop a deeper understanding of conscious and unconscious organisational and social dynamics; and to promote reflective citizenship – using this understanding to act authoritatively and responsibly as members of society and organisations within society. OPUS pursues this aim through a combination of education and training, academic research and publication and organisational consultancy and coaching, and by external communication of our findings to a wider audience. OPUS also maintains links with organisations both nationally and internationally with similar aims.

It is the ART, or unison, that drives the CRAFT, and good craft enables full and lasting realisation. I use a wide variety of blacksmith and metal working techniques including hot forging processes, plate and sheet forming, repousse, rivetting, welding, pattern making for cast iron work and etching. Their appropriate application is determined by the type of work itself.

Whilst good clinical outcomes are essential in any veterinary practice, most veterinary organisations see client satisfaction, commercial viability, team morale and individual wellbeing, as equally important to their sustainability and success. Achievement of these non-clinical outcomes relies on a broad range of non-clinical skills including communication, leadership, mental health and wellbeing and business acumen. An increasing array of non-clinical CPD courses and events become available to the veterinary market, consumers (and providers) are becoming increasingly uncertain and confused about if, and/or how these courses are ‘vetted’. In truth, anyone can set up and promote themselves as a CPD provider or trainer with no experience or qualifications in their alleged area of expertise. No matter how well-intentioned, trainers and coaches with insufficient qualifications or knowledge can do more harm than good if they stray beyond their area of competence or use ‘lay theories’ as opposed to evidence-based models and techniques. This is particularly relevant in area involving mental health and wellbeing. Until now, no standards of ‘Best Practice’ have existed to reassure consumers of non-clinical CPD that the CPD provider is appropriately qualified and that their courses are planned and effectively delivered in a way that is relevant to the ethical context of the veterinary profession.

Meet Gehane Gordelier Education Consultant As an education consultant I provide on-site and remote/online guidance, support and training for headteachers, senior and middle leaders and practitioners at every level to help them to further improve their practice; this includes governors. Most of my work is currently in the South East and in Jersey. As an HMI I reviewed the implementation of policies and practice in education. I inspected local authorities, initial teacher education as well as primary, secondary and special schools in the maintained and independent sectors. I have experience of reviewing a range of curriculum subjects for Ofsted and now undertake deep dives of subjects for schools. As HMI, I was the national lead for the inspection of information and communication technology in primary schools and the inspection of international schools in England. Areas of specialism include strengthening leadership and management and improving the teaching of phonics, early reading and writing, MFL, EAL and accelerating school improvement. I have a B.Ed.
