Our success and popularity as a college are built upon our commitment to providing our students with the best possible learning environment and highest possible standards of support and guidance. We are proud of the excellent relationships that exist between staff and students and our purposeful, lively and friendly atmosphere. Since opening, the College has been a popular choice for students and has continued to expand. There are approximately 2000 students on roll with a significant proportion travelling to Darlington from County Durham, Teesside and North Yorkshire. We also enrol a significant number from independent schools. The majority of our students have a full A Level Study Programme and the academic work of the College is of a high standard with an excellent record of examination success across the curriculum. In 2021 our A Level pass rate was an outstanding 100% with a high grade rate of over 64%. Over recent years, we have invested more than £7 million in our buildings and facilities at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College. Developments include an expanded and refurbished library, open access learning areas, Apple equipped Media and Art Graphics suites, state of the art science facilities, a fully equipped performance studio and purpose built progress tutor group spaces. There was also an extension completed to the student common room which included a Costa Coffee outlet. We’ve also done a lot of work to preserve and enhance our iconic Victorian frontage. Fitology Hub began in 2016, training one client at 5am on Hilly Fields. As word spread, more and more women signed up and the positive feedback we got made us realise we had something really special to give. So we decided to trade in our freezing cold mornings for something more permanent. While we were researching where to set up shop, we couldn’t believe that there was nothing of the kind already in Brockley, considering the wealth of businesses providing most of the crucial things needed in life - such as good coffee! We consider having an amazing training space as just as important as that. Unit 5 of the Brockley Cross Business Centre was Fitology Hub’s first home, big enough (just) for one client, Suzanne and our dog Bosco, a tiny puppy at the time. In less than a year, it was clear that we needed a bigger space as new members walked through our doors wanting to explore strength training. Unit 43 is the well-loved, warm space that we landed in. Today, we are proud to be a local business that works with women of all ages and from all walks of life. We offer something more personalised than a gym so that our members can access strength and fitness training, from female coaches who understand the barriers to exercising, as well as the benefits. We believe that by changing the way women experience ‘the gym’, we can help make an impact, not only on our member's lives, but also on the world of fitness. Our dream is that Fitology Hub continues to inspire more people to improve their health, well-being, confidence and of course, their strength.

We are delighted to welcome our new Executive Director Paul Smyth, who comes to us with a wealth of experience and a strong reputation for ground breaking youth work. I am thrilled to have taken up the post of Executive Director with Politics in Action – and I want to start by congratulating my predecessor Patricia O’Lynn on her election to the Northern Ireland Assembly. We live in a turbulent time for politics around the world, nationally and locally – and this makes the work of supporting young people’s role as active citizens more challenging and even more important. We are emerging from a global pandemic which has put unprecedented restrictions on the lives and freedoms of young people, and which has impacted their learning, their social lives, their relationships and for some their mental health. Politics in Action responded proactively to these challenges by moving workshops online and ensuring continuity. I am optimisticwe can return to largely face-to-face delivery of our programmes with young people in schools and other settings, and can find new ways of engaging with more young people and in particular those who are not normally invited into conversations about politics and citizenship. Much of what we already do is in collaboration with schools and with other youth organisations. I see so much potential for additional collaborations that allow our little charity to punch above its weight. One of the many attractions of the role is the excellent Board of Trustees who provide strong governance, leadership and vision for Politics in Action. They bring significant social and political capital to the charity and use it in the interests of young people and our shared future. I would love to hear your ideas about how Politics in Action should direct our energies over the coming months and years. Beulah is an outward looking church, interested in Rhiwbina and concerned about the wider world. We describe our style of church life as liberal but lively encouraging participation in worship in which we mix traditional hymnody and new music from the world church. We encourage a thoughtful faith, questioning and exploring together what we understand the Bible and faith means today. We have adopted a range of worship patterns. Our main service is Family Worship on a Sunday morning. This gathers all ages together, there is a Junior Church catering for all ages and we have a crèche. The service lasts an hour and a quarter or so and there is coffee after the service. In addition to the service on a Sunday there is one other mid-week service. Meeting Point is primarily a gathering where we share readings for the week and pastoral news. Beulah Church affirms that Christ welcomed all into his company without exception. He did not judge who people were, though he challenged how people behaved towards each other. We believe God calls all kinds of people to work and witness in his name and we want all to feel welcome and included in all aspects of Beulah’s life and leadership. We acknowledge that we have not always lived up to Christ’s standard of warmth and welcome. But, we testify that when his Spirit is at work amongst us we are a people offering care and compassion to all-comers. In 2018 six URC congregations agreed to form The Cardiff and Penarth United Reformed Church Pastorate. The other five churches are: Bethesda URC Tongwynlais, Canton Uniting Church, City URC, Elfed Avenue United Church, and Parkminster URC. Following the URC call process we are delighted to welcome the Reverends Martha McInnes and David Dean as Ministers to the Pastorate. Horden used to be a mining village, and back in the Sixties, it was the pit that defined what our community was. Young people were a vital part of that group, and the Centre you see today grew out of the Youth Club that started in 19­66 in the renovated pit canteen — and the Girls' Infant School (later a Mixed Infants, but the girls don't like to remember that part). Horden Youth Club moved from their first building into one on Sunderland Road, and from there to a "hut" in the school playground. When the Infant School closed its doors to little ones, Durham County Council offered the facility to the Youth Club. By the time they were ready to move in, in the late Seventies, rain had seeped into the building and where the pool table now stands in the main hall, a huge hole was dug to make the floor safe and re-lay the beautiful parquet flooring. When the repair and refurbishment was finished, Horden Youth Centre was born. It's all right — the hole was filled in, but if ever we tell you that a former staff member is still here in spirit, please don't ask too many questions… It was decided that two rooms could be offered to other people in Horden and so, for a while, what are now the dining room and training room were used for all sorts of activities leaving the rest of the building for the young people. It was at that point that we became Horden Youth and Community Centre, but it was several years before the "Youth" and the "Community" bits joined together in the way you see us now. Many changes have taken place in the intervening years, not least becoming first a registered charity and, later, a limited company. And now? Regardless of any surface changes, what we are at our core doesn't change at all. Quite simply, we are here to offer pursuits and experiences to the local community which encourage choice and personal development. By keeping costs down and creating a warm and friendly environment, as well as operating an 'open door' policy for anyone who requires help, advice, signposting or support — and often just someone to listen — we strive, every day, to provide a hub for people to become involved with new people and the wider community around them. In keeping with our motto 'from the cradle (almost) to the grave', we offer services for all age groups from the very young to the elderly. Take a deep breath, now… Our Nursery provides affordable child care for 2 to 5 year olds; the tweenies are well catered for with dance and gymnastics classes; the Youth Club caters for 11 to 19 year-olds; there is usually a huge variety of classes and activities for adults; and apart from our Luncheon Club, Friday Afternoon Bingo Club and Gentle Fitness group, we are planning even more events for the over 65s. This will include a Fifties-style coffee bar complete with 'frothy coffee' and period music, so keep an eye on the Centre notices, website, newsletters and local press for further details as we get them! Other future plans include 'Hole in the Wall Enterprises', a social enterprise venture that has grown out of our clippy mat group; open days; fairs (that's table-top sales, not waltzers and dodgems — but you never know!); and, of course, an ever-growing list of activities and courses. We know our past and our present, and are ever-hopeful that we will go from strength to strength in our future. We want people to use the Centre because that's what it's here for. We need to know what the community wants from us, and we need the people of Horden to tell us. We invite you — whether you want to join us and join in, offer your services, or complain that we're getting it all wrong — to come in for a chat any time and help us continue to help Horden — the way Horden wants!
