PREPARE TO AMAZE YOURSELF, AND YOUR FRIENDS, WITH THE BEAUTIFUL CANOE YOU WILL BUILD HERE.. AND YES! YOU DO TAKE YOUR CANOE HOME WITH YOU WHEN YOU LEAVE. FIRST DAY The first stage in the process is to cut out the marine ply panels, and sew these together using cable ties as seen here. This is a fun stage, and you quickly see your canoe coming together. Children often opt to be involved at this stage. Not all children  decide to be with us for the slower paced sections of the build. SECOND DAY The second day is mainly taken up with cutting, planing, sanding and fitting the seats ( the Thwarts). At the end of the second day we aim to apply the first coat of resin, to the inside of your canoe, along with glassfibre tape ro reinforce the seams.  THIRD DAY  Most of the third day is taken up with preparing the outside of your canoe for the resin and tape. This involves a lot of patient planing and sanding, The whole boat gets two coats of resin inside and out, and all the seams are reinforced with glassfibre tape on the outside too. I'm a wooden boatbuilder, who specialises in building lightweight, skin-on-frame boats and runs kayak & canoe-building courses. Designing and making simple, beautiful and usable boats gives me huge satisfaction. At school and university I always had access to workshops. I grew up kayaking in Devon, then much further afield (Nepal, British Columbia, The Alps...). They were the things I enjoyed the most. But after graduating with an MA from the Royal College of Art, I didn’t set foot in a workshop for over a decade. I worked in a digital world, designing good experiences for people on the web. I set up my own company and taught design at university. At weekends and in the evenings, I did up a couple of VW vans, and worked on our family home. When a friend died from cancer I knew life was too short, and I had to get back in the workshop and on the water. Looking to weave together a life-long love of kayaking, design and craftsmanship, I moved to Lyme Regis and enrolled to train at The Boat Building Academy. When I returned to Bristol in 2015, the Underfall Yard had just re-opened some of their historic workshops with Lottery Funding and I took on a unit. It’s now a place to make boats that I can be proud of, that people use and that will last. It’s a satisfying reward when I help people build a boat and they say “I made that!” Whether you build a boat, or I build it for you, it would be my pleasure to help you climb aboard your very own Shipshape boat.

Welcome to Yoga Soc! Our society is a big family of Yogis (of all abilities!!) practising yoga and mindfulness in a non-judgemental environment... and having a laugh while doing it! Every week, we hold yoga and mindfulness sessions free for our members and this year we will be offering both in-person and online classes (so there really is no excuse not to get involved!!). These sessions are super varied: one week we’re meditating in silence, the next we’re burning off our uni stress in a high-intensity class. We also organise regular socials, all of which are centred around mindfulness, well-being & relaxation. Keep an eye on our social media channels to find out more! LSESU's Yoga Society are committed to cultivating an inclusive environment where our members can de-stress and work on their yoga practice in a safe, open, and accessible way.
