Inspired by Smart School WebsitesThe name of our Trust is inspired by the story of Dr Ivy Williams. Born in Teignbridge (Newton Abbot), in 1877, she managed what we would wish for all the children and young people of Teignbridge and surrounding area that we serve in our schools…she fulfilled her childhood dreams and ambitions. Despite those ambitions at the time seeming highly unlikely – she dared to dream, she set her sights high, she proved her doubters wrong… On 10 May 1922 Dr Ivy Williams became the first woman to be called to the Bar (formally recognised as a qualified Barrister of Law) of England and Wales. This was despite having passed many of her qualifications in Law as early as 1903. The law and regulations at the time prevented females from formally qualifying and practising law. Changes to these laws and regulations in 1919 and 1920 saw her make her breakthrough a few years later.

Siddy works in the glorious Devon countryside just outside Cullompton. In 2012, she embarked on the mammoth task of replacing her old workshop and constructing a new eco house and studio. Still a “work in progress”, the house is now almost finished and Siddy has achieved her aim of providing the domestic heating and hot water from the waste heat generated by the glass making process. Her camera is never far away, whether scuba diving in Sinai, dog walking in the woods or quietly sitting by her pond observing the dragonflies emerge. She is often to be found, working on the hot glass, with a photo for reference on the bench beside her. Traditionally, glass blowing has been regarded as a team activity and many glassmakers consider it impossible to work alone. Siddy, however, prefers to work “solo” and has devised ways of working which eliminate the need for a team or even an assistant. This makes for unique pieces of glass work.

Needle-felting is a fascinating experience, watching creations taking a life and form of their own as you work. It is a very intuitive and tactile craft. Tools required are few and the materials relatively inexpensive. The work can be picked up and put down at a moment’s notice, and can be carried out almost anywhere. Michelle started teaching the craft eight years ago, holding regular workshops at venues across the country. She has now taught over 2000 people and her book on Needlefelting will be published in January 2024 by Crowood Press. Workshops are held in a very relaxed atmosphere - it’s been said that the laughs are as good as the course!  There are several regular venues all over the country or you can travel to Furzie's Workshop in Somerset or arrange for Furzie to travel to you.

Willow and Wire Sculptor Victoria or Vik as she likes to be called hails from South Somerset; home of ancient kingdoms, fables and roads less travelled, these origins feed into her work, representing elements of the natural world and those who celebrate it. Vik began her creative journey as a theatre designer and maker, using a willow framework for carnivalesque costumes, from here she developed her practice to bring her dynamic sketches to life, creating forms from willow and wire that encapsulate her love of texture and mass. Now her Coach House Studio in the heart of Mid Devon, is her base where she works to commission on a range of projects for large and small gardens, parklands, orchards and public spaces; working with clients to create pieces that sit harmoniously in their environment. Clients include designers, private collectors, companies, charities, councils and housing groups in addition she has created large scale sculptures for The Woodland Trust, The RHS Chelsea Flower Show and Torre Abbey.
