Description

Learn to sketch the moods of the sky with the Cloud Appreciation Society. Clouds are expressions on the face of the atmosphere, and this 120-minute Zoom workshop, led by artist Donna Levinstone (Member 1,082) and Cloud Appreciation Society founder Gavin Pretor-Pinney (Member 001), will teach you how to read them as you learn to sketch them with watercolour and pencil. The online workshop is suitable both for beginners who want to build confidence and learn basic techniques and for more experienced artists looking how to use the sky to bring feeling into their landscapes.

This live Zoom workshop will introduce you in a friendly, inclusive and supportive way to different approaches and different techniques. We will be working in a expressive style both in pencil or charcoal and in watercolour. We'll learn how to depict skies that feel moody, skies that are light and free, and skies that feel mysterious.

Experienced art educator Donna will demonstrate simple painting and drawing techniques as we all work from reference photographs in the Society Photo Gallery. Cloud Appreciation Society founder, Gavin Pretor-Pinney, will give simple explanations for why clouds appear they way they do as you work on your sketches. He’ll also inspire you to explore how clouds affect your own moods with the help of some classic sky poetry.

Recording: A recording of this workshop will shared with everyone after the live event, so attendees can review what was covered afterwards and those unable to join live can follow along in their own time.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What materials will I need for this course?

Basic materials you’ll need for this workshop:

    • Any basic pad of watercolour paper. This can be whatever size or format you want, but it is best to have a pad you can tear the sheets out of as we’ll sometimes be wanting to move on from a watercolour while it is still drying. We recommend a ‘cold pressed’ paper, which is more bumpy, as this adds texture to the pencil/charcoal sketching
    • A soft pencil, charcoal pencil or charcoal sticks for the monochrome sketching.
    • A kneaded eraser.
    • A standard watercolour paint set. (Fairly inexpensive options to consider are this or this). We find it helpful to get a set that includes a black pigment, as cloud painting often involves greys.
    • A tube of white watercolour paint that is opaque, like Titanium White is a helpful additional paint.
    • Brushes:
      • Any basic fine-tip brush (one will probably already come with your paint set).
      • A broader brush #8–#12 for washes. Any round or flat shaped brush will work, but a pointed oval shape can be useful for atmospheric work.
    • A few sheets of paper towel or tissue.
    • More than one water jar to use for brush cleaning and applying clear washes.
