Description

About this Training

This comprehensive 4-day course provides invaluable training on the processes used to treat natural gas and remove contaminants like acid gases (CO2 and H2S), mercury, BTEX, oxygen, nitrogen, and NORM. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the various solvent and non-solvent based treating processes, including chemical solvents (amines, hot potassium carbonate), physical solvents, hybrid solvents, membranes, cryogenics, solid beds, and scavengers. The course covers key selection criteria for choosing the most suitable treating process based on the gas composition and product specifications.

A major focus is sulphur recovery from acid gas removal, with detailed coverage of the Claus process, modified Claus, RedOx processes, and tail gas treating. Participants will learn about sulphur specifications, process flow schemes, circulation rates, and operational problems. For liquid treating, the course explores caustic wash, Merox, amines, and other methods to meet product specifications. The training is applicable to gas streams from associated gas, non-associated gas reservoirs, and other gas sources.

The course begins with an overview of natural gas properties, reservoir fluids, phase envelopes, production/processing, separation, dehydration, and hydrate prevention. This establishes the fundamentals before advancing into the various treating technologies. Real-world exercises are integrated throughout, providing hands-on practice in areas like separator conditions, solvent selection, circulation estimation, and treatment process planning.

With its combined emphasis on theory, design, and operations, this course equips technical professionals with a holistic understanding of gas treating and sulphur recovery. Highly experienced instructors share valuable insights gained from their extensive industry experience working with these processes. Participants will leave confidence in evaluating and selecting gas treatment solutions.

Training Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate and select appropriate gas treating processes (solvent, non-solvent, membranes, cryogenics, etc.) based on the natural gas composition, contaminant levels, and product specifications.

  • Design an integrated treatment scheme incorporating acid gas removal, dehydration, mercury removal, and other contaminant removal processes tailored to the specific gas stream properties.

  • Determine key operating parameters like solvent circulation rates, pressure, and temperature requirements for efficient acid gas treating and sulphur recovery processes.

  • Troubleshoot and identify potential operational issues in amine, physical solvent, and sulphur recovery units to improve process reliability and uptime.

  • Perform sizing calculations and develop basic process flow diagrams for gas treating and sulphur recovery systems given a set of feed conditions and product targets.

Trainer

Your expert course leader, based in UK, has established himself as an authority in gas processing and conditioning. As the lead process engineer for the $300 million Omar Gas Project in the Middle East, he was responsible for the entire process design of the 160 MMscf/d gas plant from concept to detailed engineering, including gas chilling, dehydration, and a two-stage propane refrigeration system for NGL/LPG extraction with 95% butane recovery. He has leveraged process simulation tools extensively, such as modeling Brunei Shell’s entire offshore gas gathering network for debottlenecking. His expertise spans plant conceptualization, comparing technology alternatives like membrane vs cryogenic NGL separation, developing process flow diagrams, sizing key equipment like glycol dehydration units and stabilizer columns, and ensuring robust specifications meet product requirements. His gas conditioning proficiency has been applied across mega-projects globally for supermajors like Shell, BG Group and Petronas.
